  (1) Share Windows XP files and directories: Many users of Windows XP have experienced difficulty in sharing files and folders over local networks. The approach that I have found to work consistently is:
  1. Disable 'Simple File Sharing' - Select 'Start' --> 'My Computer' --> Tools Menu --> Folder Options --> View --> Advanced Settings.
  2. Open Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Services. Enable the 'Server' service by setting the 'startup' option to Automatic or Manual. This is a standard service needed for sharing files and folders under Windows XP.
  3. Open Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Computer Management. Scroll to System Tools --> Shared Folders --> Shares. From the 'Action' menu, select 'Add Share' and follow the instructions.
  4. You may also want to add some 'Users' to 'Administrator' or other groups for shared folder access. Under 'Computer Management', select the group name and choose 'Add' from the 'Action' menu. It can also be used to add domain users as local administrators.
Sharing files on computers directly connected to the Internet is not recommended. However, restricting access to specific users using the above procedures mitigates security risks.   Also see: Windows XP Professional File Sharing

(2) Repair a damaged MS Outlook Personal Store File (pst file): This program is usually located in the directory 'C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033'. First - close MS Outlook. To run the program open a 'Run Box'. Click Start -> Run. Enter the directory to the scanpst.exe file. Click 'Ok'. Let the scanpst program find and correct any problems. I recommend doing a backup of your pst files first.

(3) Cleanup Files Manager: does not work or freezes.

This can also be caused by a corrupt temporary file. Clear the files from the Temp folder: Click Start -> Run type in %temp% ), Click Ok. Delete all files, if files are locked delete as many as possible.
'Ctrl-A' can be used to select all the files in the 'Temp'.
